Breath: Taken

What can one possibly say about an album that pours heart and soul into every note, with such pure and meticulous intention breathing bliss into each piece? As his bio reads, "Mala is a producer, DJ, label owner and visionary best known for his contributions to the scene known as dubstep. But to people who have been touched by his music or moved by his DJing, he holds a deeper place in their hearts. Through certain frequencies, his music carries a message that fundamentally connects people." In an age where "dubstep" is a dirty word (thanks America) and the representation so present in today's media is bombastic, nihilistic, and carries absolutely NO discipline along with it, Mala holds true to his/our roots of deep medi(tation) beats, lush harmonies, and tradition. This time around (though this is his first proper full-length release) Mala explores the sounds and talents of Cuba, as it is reported he visited there in 2011 and was blown away by the rich culture and vast talent of the island (connecting himself with the Havana Cultura project/Initiative). What was produced from that connection is nothing short of stunning. I have personal favourites (Curfew, The Tourist, Noche Sueños, Changuito, and Calle F) but this album begs... Demands to be heard in its entirety Every. Single. Time. I had the fortune of meeting Mala when he played in L.A. this summer; the man had humility and peace eminating from him, taking all the time us fans needed to ask him questions, sign our swag, etc. Mala will go down as the Godfather of Dubstep, of intelligent dance music, of true soul riddim. As Blackdown (UK producer) notes, "What was and remains central to [Mala] is his deep connection with sound and his ability to create frequencies and harmonics that share that connection in a way that blissfully, powerfully and peacefully unifies all those who listen." Thank you Mala!

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s

One half of the revered dubstep duo Digital Mystikz, producer, DJ, label owner, and Londoner Mala (Mark Lawrence) discovered reggae in his teens, but it was a later fascination with drum'n'bass and jungle that opened his eyes to the possibilities of rhythm and bass. Thanks to jungle's love of sampling different genres, Mala was turned on to jazz, funk, and other genres while returning to reggae, where he chose dub master Augustus Pablo as a role model. He spent the early 2000s spinning dubstep around...
