When Restraint is met with Passion

The results can be truly refreshing. Such is Noctourniquet, the newest release from The Mars Volta. The bands ability to hone in and refine a sound that was once thick with lush soundscapes that were blended with layer upon layer of instrumentation should be inspiration to any and all who create art. The gift to provoke emotion without hysterics or boisterous exhibitions of technicality is one that is rare and all the more special when achieved. Never has one been able to feel more comfortable and at home with such an eerie and terrifying world created in Noctourniquet. Listeners will surely stay a while.

Really bad

I've been a fan of this band since the beginning, and although I'm a big fan of change, there is also a such thing as bad change. It doesn't always work out well for every band that tries to expand.

I've listened to this album roughly 20 times and I've come to the conclusion that it is a very lazy effort. This album was an Omar side project recorded 3 years ago, and it really sounds like it. It's just not nearly as adventurous as previous albums, and now with these short pop-style songs how are they any different than all the other bands out there? They now just got lost in the pile.

Every bands creative well runs dry eventually, ever single band that's ever existed, it just happens. Well.... it's happened. You can always tell when a band is getting older and on the decline.

Simply Amazing!!!

As always, the Mars Volta have brought us another aural masterpiece. Beautiful, challenging, and absorbing. Different, as each of their albums is, Noctourniquet stands as one of the Mars Volta's greatest efforts to date. The level of craft and the simplicity of sound showcases the strengths of this iteration of the Mars Volta Group. Not to diminish this or their previous albums and catalog. Each of their albums stands on its own. I of course have my personal favorites (songs and albums), but I leave such specificly objective choices to each listener. Listen and enjoy!

Picking up the pieces from At the Drive-In, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez formed the Mars Volta and wasted little time branching out into elements of hardcore, psychedelic rock, and free jazz that expanded on the boundaries of their previous work. Although their previous band's demise ultimately arrived before they were able to truly capitalize on their mounting commercial triumphs, the Mars Volta immediately impressed with their willingness to eschew conventional logic and push themselves...
