Album Review

Scars of Time, the first album from Norway's Deride, doesn't sound much like its Scandinavian metal predecessors — save, perhaps, Entombed, whom they resemble in tonal density, and Meshuggah, whom they resemble during the more experimental, precise moments. In other words, this is not Bathory. More often than not, Deride aspires to the stomp-core of American bands like Machinehead, Biohazard, Pantera, and Crowbar. However, Scars of Time does have its share of soaring heights; not quite as operatic as an Emperor, they are melodic nonetheless. This is heavyweight stuff, but the hammering insistence can grow tiresome. To borrow from a cooking expression, there are only so many ways to boil water.

not bad but nothing compares to slipknot you would understand if you were a real maggot

Great metal album

Album ranks with my all time favs. Have the dynamics that a lot of metal bands lack, and their use of clean vocals doesn't sound as trite as so much of the crap that's out there today. Also note the song lengths - they get in, hit it hard, and get out - songs are tight but still heavy. Driven to Perversion and Cast from Thee are fantastic.

Michelsen (vocals), Ole Walaunet (guitar), Johan Alme (bass), and Kjetil Greve (drums) secured the original lineup of the crew. A few months after...
