Album Review

Originally released in 1997, this maniacal mix of hardcore punk, thrash, experimental rock, and progressive metal has been reissued with three live bonus tracks and new packaging. Their approach is not as varied as on Calculating Infinity, but certainly contains enough innovation to demonstrate why they quickly became a favorite of Mike Patton. There is an inherent human need to label all things new, hence Now or Never Records came up with the term mathematical metal, which for the most part fits their complex approach. The extreme drumming of Chris Pennie builds on the creations of Dave Lombardo and raises the bar to previously unattainable levels. The throaty vocals of Dimitri Minakakis fit some of the music, but a more musical approach, à la Mike Patton, would have added some much-needed variety to this harsh session. While this release does not capture the boys in peak form, there is more than enough here for fans of this style or those who crave creative music.
