iTunes Review

Often compared to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for singer Matt Mays’ similar snarl, Mays and El Torpedo do project their tunes through a heartland rock vernacular where crunched-up electric guitars swing with the feel of an interstate whipping past the windshield. Not bad for a group hailing from Nova Scotia. The Canadian band’s second album features plenty of hauntingly familiar melodies and guitar solos ripped straight from an arsenal of 1970s riffs. But the band keep it fresh and entertaining, sticking to their formula and showing their admiration for everyone from Petty (“The Hunter, The Hunted”) and the Ramones (“Rock Ranger Record”) to Neil Young (“Tall Trees”) without losing themselves in the process. They augment their approach with additional electricity, adding a near-techno groove to “Building A Boat,” a turbo-charged momentum to “Digital Eyes,” atmospheric keyboards to the title track, and lots of excess riffage throughout. 1970’s-80’s classic rock returns with a few new twists to bring back the faith that the fountain of youth can be found in the magic of the eternal electric guitar solo.
