This cross-section of Woody Herman's Decca recordings could more accurately be titled The Best of Early Woody Herman. Since there are only 20 selections on this two-LP set and many (but not all) of these numbers have since been reissued on CD, this set is not too essential and should only be acquired at a budget price, particularly since there are no liner notes. There are some good examples of Herman's early swing band here, ranging from "Woodchopper's Ball" and Herman's theme "Blue Flame" to the odd "Laughing Boy Blues" and an early Dizzy Gillespie arrangement, "Down Under."
