12 Songs, 42 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

The iconic former Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox tackles an intelligent mix of Great American Songbook tunes and classic jazz, blues, and R&B on 2014’s Nostalgia. Working with producer Mike Stevens, Lennox brings her peerless voice to Gershwin and Heyward’s “Summertime” and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You,” as well as three classics most associated with Billie Holiday: “God Bless the Child,” “I Cover the Waterfront,” and “Strange Fruit." Whether it’s music by Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, or Sammy Fain, Lennox finds a way to bring the classic melodies and sentiments to fresh new life, with smart, spare piano-based arrangements that are lightly orchestrated to perfection.

A Classic interprets the classics

Check the microsite created for this new release from Annie Lennox; she tells the tale behind her inspiration and reasons for approaching the Great American Songbook of the 1930s/40s. La Lennoxa is an icon of the 80s, 90s and now. Truly, a Classic interprets the classics. Her take on Screamin' Jay Hawkins "I Put a Spell on You" is the most spine tingling version since Nina Simone recorded it in the late 50s. Can't wait to hear this collection on warm vinyl but, even digital compression can't keep down this wonder woman's voice!

Pure Genius

I watched the album trailer and just from the interview and snippets of the songs from this album, all I could do is mutter, WOW! The combination of Annie Lennox's silky voice with the cool bluesy jazz is pure genius! Can't wait!
