Album Review

Carmen Rasmusen's name and face might ring a bell for fans of American Idol; she made it into the final six during the second season of the television program, the same season that made Clay Aiken a star. It would be easy to dismiss Rasmusen based on such ignoble beginnings, and she certainly does aim squarely at the polished, often artistically anemic world of mainstream country with her album Nothin' Like the Summer. The weakness of this album is in its predictability: Every country-pop flourish is employed here, particularly on the title track, which reels off a list of bucolic, rural memories, delighting in the kind of sepia-toned front-porch/fishing-pole pap that Nashville has tried to sell listeners countless times before. (And, frankly, Rasmusen seems a bit young to have such nostalgic reveries.) In fact, every track here seems to employ a tried-and-true template, from every chord progression, to every sentiment, to every vocal nuance, to every peal of pedal steel. (Rasmusen is credited with a couple of co-writes, but for the most part, the songs are manufactured for her by other songwriters.) Nevertheless, Rasmusen does have a nice set of pipes and a rich, rounded tone that is reminiscent of the ivory-throated Kelly Willis. For the most part though, this is a predictable album. But in the mainstream country music world, predictability can often open doors.

I was going to write this song!

I'm so happy Carmen went country since she has such a nice lilt in her voice! I just saw this video on CMT and I just had to buy this song! I love it! It embodies everything people love about summer...I wish I had written this song...I was going to write a song just like this one! It's beautiful! Especially when she goes up to the higher notes on the chorus! It'll be a definate road trip song....Can't wait to preview her entire album.

I love this new song. Carmen has a very unique sound.

This song is so great for summer because it just puts you in the summertime mood. I also love Carmen's voice because it is so unique, its not like anyone out there. She has always sounded country but she has this deep tone to her voice that is really like no other country female artist out there. If you are looking for a great song to kick the summertime off with than this is the one. She is going to be around for a long time, so get over the 99 cents and get it because you wont be disappointed.

Wowza : )

This song is great. Even though it's really hot in the summer this song gets me excited to feel the hot sun kiss my skin. It helps me get through the summer heat and really think about what I enjoy about the summer. It was cool to see her beat, "Nothin' Better to Do" sung by LeAnn Rimes , (someone who has had more experience with country music) on Top 20 countdown on cmt. It was deffinatley different, but not shocking. I think she deserved that win and deserves people to buy this song.
