Album Review

Never one to lack confidence in his abilities, Joseph Arthur released a full album's worth of material during the first four months of 2008, collected on the EPs Could We Survive and Crazy Rain (with the promise of more to come, of course). Very similar to the previous year's Let's Just Be, Crazy Rain has up-front productions with buzzing guitars and distorted effects making the largest impression. Arthur's vocal performances are comparatively down in the mix; it's a good blend of production and performance, although Arthur's songwriting apparently isn't keeping up with his musical ideas (evinced by the particularly weak "I Wanna Get You Alone"). The upbeat songs are best, all of them very well recorded and taking advantage of his Lonely Astronaut studio (as well as a returned favor from guest vocalist Greg Dulli).

Customer Reviews

Magical, Sexy

He is at the top of his game, by missing this and the rest of the EP's you are missing too much!

Nothing 2 Hide and Radio Euphoria stand out...

Joseph never ceases to amaze me. This might just be his best work yet. Nothing 2 Hide and Radio Euphoria stand out in a track list of great tunes. Two more EPs to come? I can’t believe the prolific nature of this guy and I can’t wait to hear more.

lonely astronaut crashes

Not quite what I was expecting from from Mr. Arthur. I've read a couple of great reviews including in Rolling Stone, but I was really disappointed.

Biography

Born: September 28, 1971 in Akron, OH

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Ohio native Joseph Arthur was discovered by Peter Gabriel, who signed the folk-rock songwriter to Real World Records in the mid-'90s. Arthur's debut, Big City Secrets, was released in 1997 and went fairly unnoticed, despite an eclectic, brooding sound influenced by the likes of Leonard Cohen, Joe Henry, and the late Jeff Buckley. Gabriel influenced Arthur's music, too, exposing his songwriting to a global palette, roping him into Gabriel's annual WOMAD shows, and giving him a roster of fellow labelmates...
