Like a heartrending European film, Diego Garcia’s Laura is both beautiful and sorrowful. Exquisite and silky melodies can be easily absorbed transporting the listener to a time that probably only exists in Morrissey’s intricate mind. We a had hint of Diego’s brilliance in Elefant’s debut album Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid, where love and longing was the driving force of the record; it was innocent, elegant, and sparkling. On Laura, Diego manages to capture romance and its very essence with his bare hands, giving us a quick glimpse of the splendor and the malady of love.
“Inside My Heart” starts the record with a lush sound that evokes better days of old; days in which showing emotions was manly, chivalry was the norm and we all believed in true love. The arrangements on Laura are carefully considered and breathtaking; Zeke Zima’s beautiful guitar arpeggios complements Bensi’s cello splendidly giving all the songs a potent yet soothing feel. Though most of the record captures Diego’s smooth and attractive voice, the absolute honesty of “Nothing To Hide” shows Diego’s true vocal dexterity; he sings ‘It’s hard to move on, but when the feelings are gone you know that love…’ the pain in his voice is palpable and it is perhaps the most sincere song I have ever heard. “Roses And Wine” is a gem; the cello implants itself in your mind and decorates the song quite well, while the lyrics are possibly the catchiest on the record.
“Separate Lives” is reminiscent of Seu Jorge with its tropical yet cool and romantic vibe; “Laura” brings to mind “Fuiste Mia Un Verano” by Leonardo Favio, and “Under This Spell” gives us a peek of Diego’s desperation to run away from it all. This record makes us realize that life does not have a Hollywood ending before making us realize that yes! Life does have a Hollywood ending; it’s about the failures of a man that believes in love but could not hold on to it due to his choice of the highs in life over his girl; yet the record also suggests the redemption of the character, and the happy ending that we all want to see.
Laura is a record that is perhaps too sophisticated and too pure for our times. No artist has come close in recent years to what Diego has accomplished with this album; it is truly one of a kind.

"Laura" A Record for Lovers

This is just beautiful. This collection of songs makes me feel as if I am suddenly whisked away on a sail boat in the Caribbean with my woman. I first heard "Stay" on KCRW and I have been waiting for this ever since. Plus it's only $5.99! Thank you Diego and thank you iTunes. Oh and get out to LA to play a show.

Beautiful, Simply Enchanting

It's really, really beautiful. 'You Were Never There' sounds like a Beatles song, AND it's free. I'd buy it!
