Nowell's Delight

As a devotee of early music, I found the pieces in is album not only captivating, but well-played and interestingly arranged. Piffaro's musicians are exceptional and perform on their ancient instruments as skillfully as Wynton Marsalis on his modern trumpet. The selections present an intriguing glimpse into the Christmas music of the Renaissance with some surprises: there are two Greensleeves, a piece I thought I knew well, here a whole new song, followed by "The Old Yeare Now," which turns out to be the Greensleeves I know but with unfamiliar (to me) lyrics. A delightful discovery.

Piffaro is an early music ensemble of mostly wind instrument players whose reportorial focus is the late-medieval and Renaissance eras.
