Album Review

Avishai Cohen contributed all ten selections to Continuo, originals that are often influenced by Middle Eastern music. Cohen's bass dominates throughout, easily taking the most solo space. His trio with pianist Sam Barsh and drummer Mark Guilliana is tight, often being joined by Amos Hoffman on oud. The music is atmospheric, sometimes introspective, touched strongly by Western classical music and spontaneous in spots. Lovers of Avishai Cohen's bass solos will want this set although others will wish that there were more variety in frameworks and instrumentation.

Oh My God!

I must admit, I am a huge fan of Avishai Cohens music, so for me, the fact that there is a new album is always exciting! But, with this trio consisting of Mark Guiliana on drums and Sam Barsh on Keys, this band takes the music to places I have ever heard music go. Ethnic, eclectic, masterful, insightful, emotional, jazz, middle eastern, beyond-genre, unclassifiable beauty!!!!! This album is a MUST HAVE for any one who loves music! Buy This CD! You will not be disappointed!

Middle Eastern Tinged Jazz

Avishai Cohen is rapidly becoming one of my favorite contemporary jazz artists. He is an incredible composer as well as performer, and each subsequent release is a little better than the last. This disc, like his others, is masterfully composed and just a little quirky. Cohen tends to work with unconventional instrumentation, and this album features the oud, which is a Middle Eastern lute. The oud really provides an interesting texture when it plays a unison melody line with the piano or upright bass. The compositions are quite advanced, but never over the listener's head. There is also and incredible dynamic range within each song, making for quite an expressive album all around. A must have!

Gentle and melodic, yet engaging and progressive. Beautiful classical piano, driving stand-up bass, loose drums that attack, and the occasional oud create a unique and natural sound.

Born and raised in Israel, Avishai Cohen has often combined Middle Eastern and Israeli music with both electric and acoustic jazz. Cohen began studying the piano at age 11 and was 14 when he became interested in jazz. After playing piano in a high-school jazz band, Cohen switched to the electric bass and soon fell in love with the music of Jaco Pastorius. Cohen was 16 when he enrolled in the Music & Arts High School in Jerusalem, and as a young adult, he played a few local gigs in Jerusalem before...
