Album Review

Christian McBride's second recording as a leader is an all-star affair, matching the young bassist in various combinations with either Kenny Garrett or Gary Bartz on alto, Chick Corea or Kenny Barron on keyboards, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, drummer Jack DeJohnette and percussionist Mino Cinelu. The music ranges from fairly straight-ahead to funky. Both Garrett and Bartz have opportunities to blow hard (pity that they were not teamed up); Chick Corea revives his "Tones for Joan's Bones," and McBride (who contributed all but four of the ten songs) overdubs his basses on Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower." Continually interesting music which contains plenty of variety.

Well worth a look

Very nice album. I am surprised more people have not caught on to this.

Amazing contemporary jazz.

This virtuoso continues the legacy of Ray Brown in terms of defining what the upright bass is capable of doing. Don't hesitate to pick up this album. Occasionally you'll hear a bit of James Brown funk in his grooves, but not as much on this album. If you're looking for a definition of contemporary jazz, look no further than this master. Christian McBride came to my attention when I used to go to Yoshi's nightspot in Oakland/Berkeley before they moved to Jack London Square in the 90's. I have yet to be disappointed by his compositions or abilities. EGAD, Whirling Dervish, and Divergence are well worth the price of the album. These three songs take you on a journey you shouldn't miss. Little Sunflower is a soft closing to the album, but a song not to be missed.

Nearly everyone's favorite acoustic bassist to emerge in the 1990s, Christian McBride's large sound and expertise, both with plucked and bowed solos, recall Ray Brown and particularly Paul Chambers. He actually started on electric bass when he was eight and took R&B gigs in high school, but by then he was getting more interested in jazz and playing the acoustic bass. McBride studied at Juilliard (starting in 1989) and then played briefly in the bands of Bobby Watson, Benny Golson, Roy Hargrove, and...
