Album Review

T-Bone is one of very few gospel crossover artists with abilities on par with the larger non-gospel set. Despite that, he's essentially unheard of outside the Christian music scene. On 2001's The Last Street Preacha, T-Bone and his crew present an entirely solid album of West Coast G-funk. It's not mere emulation, though — there are actual Sir Nose-like samples, vocoders à la Zapp & Roger, and the occasional Dre-like synth and string sampling. T-Bone's phrasing starts out with a stuttering, swaggering lope in the realm of 2Pac, but eases into an ever-relaxing lope with a smoother delivery. By the time of "Ride wit Me" he's moved into full G-funk, working his way into a Warren G area. Aside from a couple of forays into the territory of Bone (the Thugs-N-Harmony version) with four-part harmonies, and another thuggish run, the majority of the tracks feature a style that's primarily a poor man's Snoop Dogg. That's not to say T-Bone is bad in any way, though, just not Snoop himself — the talent and ability are huge here, and the styles range widely from proper West Coast G-funk to high-speed Spanish rap in the reggaeton mold. It's rare to find an artist hidden away in Christian music with this sort of crossover talent, but T-Bone is likely to remain under-recognized by many listeners.

Great Christian Rap/Hip Hop Album!

I got this album in the summer of '03, and let me start off by saying that I am a fan of Rock, Metal, Progressive Rock/Metal, Rock/Pop, Hair Metal, Instrumental Rock, and Neo-Classical Stuff. I am by no means a rap fan. However, this album has great hooks, melodies and a message for The King (Jesus Christ). As I was saying, I got this album in the summer of '03, and I just started listening to it. It had great bouncing hip-hop, (Nuttin' 2 Somethin', Up On Game, Ride Wit Me), some great ballads, (Wipe Your Tears), and some straight-up old skool rap, (Conversion, Tru 2 Life Playaz, Last Street Preacha), just a good listen all the way through. I give this album 5 stars because first of all, it's my favorite rap album. And number 2, because it was the first rap album ever, to be nominated for a Grammy. If you like rap, or that whole rap/hip-hop/pop/gangsta genre, go for this album, you won't regret it. Many Christian rap artists are known more for the breadth of their content than the quality of their rhyme skills, but Latino West Coast MC T-Bone has been praised for both. As one of the early rappers within the subgenre, many of his peers could not match his rapid-tongue delivery and witty rhymes. Believing that "hip-hop is the language of the streets" and that "God is the language of love," he has been determined to win over people off the street and into the church through his rap music.
