Album Review

Allyson gets it all together once again for this lovely selection of mostly French and Portuguese tunes, which the vocalist generally sings in the original language. While there is a lesser jazz element than in some of her other recordings, Allyson is a proven stylist who knows how to make each tune hers alone. Sometimes sounding like Susannah McCorkle, Allyson floats through more than a dozen carefully picked melodies, including "Te Amo (I Love You)," "That Day (From Cinema Paradiso)," and Bud Powell's "Parisian Thoroughfare." While she scats highly effectively on occasion, most of the songs are interpreted by her rather than used as vehicles to improvise. A tasteful group of rhythm and strings (including Gil Goldstein on accordion) provides a notable backdrop. ~ Steven A. Loewy, Rovi

Fun and well executed

(Note to the reviewer complaining about imprecise pronunciation in the languanges represented on this album: It is music, not a "Study At Home" Spanish and French course!) These are hot interpretations of the international flavors that informs all of Karrin Allyson's work. Anyone who can pull of Edith Piaf riffs along with a cool Bossa Nova is all right by me.

From Paris to Rio

This is a GREAT album. Stupid doesn't know anything about pronunciation. Karrin's French is absolutemente parfait. She did her major in French. Her Portuguese may be less than perfect, but it may merely reflect a local accent of whoever coached her. Having lived in and traveled to many different Spanish-speaking countries, I can assure you there are great regional differences. In any case, this makes absolutely no difference to ones enjoyment of the album for anyone who is not a native speaker of the language. Hey, dummy, it's all about the music!! Her voice is exquisite. "That Day" may be the most beautiful song I ever heard.

Great songs, great interpretations

I really enjoyed this album; Boooo's criticism confused me. I've lived in Brazil and France (and speak Portuguese and French) and found her Portuguese accent absolutely charming (yes, it's an accent...get over it). Her French pronouciation seemed a bit more studied and less effortless, but my point is that sounding exactly like a native speaker is not what I look for in music--it's the interpretation of the lyric conveyed through phrasing and inflection. I find Ms. Allyson almost faultless on that account. I greatly prefer her treatment of Coracao Vagabundo to Gal Costa's -- Costa has bland perfection going for her, but Allyson sounds like she "gets" what she's singing about. I will say that I didn't like the upbeat take on Inutil Paisagem; it's hard to improve on Elis Regina's version. I hope Ms. Allyson continues her forays into Brazilian music--I'd love to hear her team up with Joao Gilberto!

Born: Great Bend, KS

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

One of the more impressive jazz singers to emerge in the '90s, Karrin Allyson is a great scat singer but also highly expressive on ballads. Born in Great Bend, Kansas, Allyson grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and the San Francisco Bay Area -- during which time she began taking classical piano lessons, in addition to performing as a folksinger and in an all-female rock band, Tomboy. Upon graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1987 (and receiving a degree in piano), Allyson sang regularly at a Kansas...
