iTunes Review

Sara Groves delivers a noticeably different sort of Christmas album with O Holy Night. The Christian singer/songwriter has reflected upon her experiences as a parent and humanitarian activist on her previous releases. On this holiday effort, she brings the same highly personal touch to originals like “It’s True” (a reaffirmation of Christ’s glory featuring her young son Toby) and “To Be With You,” a warm portrait of a family gathering. She waxes thoughtful on the string-accented “Peace Peace” and gets quirky on the whimsical “Toy Packaging.” Groves’ most unorthodox moments come when she radically alters the melodies to traditional favorites like “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” and “Angels We Have Heard On High.” Even “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” gets a makeover. Though these revisions sound jarring at first, they succeed in making the listener consider the meaning of the lyrics in a fresh context. Groves’ folksy vocals – sweet, with a plaintive edge – give the tracks an intimate feel. O Holy Night is a heartfelt, sometimes surprising holiday gift from one of Christian music’s most underrated talents.

Just Okay.

Sigh. I love Sara Groves, but this was not the album I was hoping for. I found myself a little ... bored. I hate to say it, but it's true. It's a little too 'contemporary' for my tastes, and I feel like the songs all start sounding the same.

Really Worth It

I am a pastor and so I am looking for good holiday music to help me get in the mood. I like more original stuff instead of remakes of the classics. This is my favorite for this year--"It's True" is a wonderful--Sara Groves has a wonderful way of capturing the season.

Groves does X-mas beautifully

In my house, you can start hearing the sounds of X-mas music around early November. Sara Groves is a favorite of ours, and her rendition of old X-mas favorites are wonderful. But it is the Groves' X-mas originals that really have delighted me. I can't wait to make this album part of our family tradition. O HOLY NIGHT will become a soundtrack for this X-mas and many to come. You will especially enjoy IT'S TRUE-the words are fantastic. Buy the album; you won't regret it.

Genre: Christian & Gospel

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Sara Groves, a former high-school teacher in her native Rosemont, Minnesota, burst onto the gospel scene at the dawn of the new millennium with her fresh vocals and spiritual songwriting. She's been compared to the likes of Shawn Colvin and Rich Mullins; however, Groves defines her own musical demeanor. She cannot be limited to one exact label, for her contemporary Christian hooks also meld into delicate pop. Signed to Epic, Groves issued her debut, Conversations, in early 2001, followed by a string...
