Perfect, as Always!
For years I thought Frank Martin's acapella setting of the Mass text would reign unchallenged as the definitive standard. Yet, Rene Clausen's setting certainly stands in its own right. Clausen has been a great favorite of mine for years, and it is a true shame that many more professional choirs have not issued recordings of his work. I could not be more excited with all of the attention the Kansas City and Phoneix Chorales have been getting since their Grammy debut - well deserved and long overdue! This is another smash hit recording. Charles, keep them coming!
2 Grammy Wins + Producer Grammy Win!
Sorry to Richard in TX…but this album was received grammy awards this week for BEST CHORAL ALBUM, BEST ENGINEERED ALBUM, and Producer Blanton Alspaugh won BEST PRODUCER-CLASSICAL. So proud:)
Music is a 5, Performance is a 3
Rene Clausen has written some of the finest choral music of the last 25 years, and this CD bypasses much of it for newer works that don't have such a sustaining impact on the listener. Perhaps some of the fault lies in the poor intonation, quirky tempo choices, and lack of choral blend that creeps in frequently throughout this CD, especially in the soloist passages. A larger chorus may suit Clausen's MASS better than this chamber choir. The Kansas City Chorale has stunned us all for some time, especially in regards to their recording of Rheinberger, but this collection just feels "dialed in." Can't wait to hear what this ensemble does next, but I will pass on further listenings of this recording.
