Album Review

First glances at London's McFly could cause one to believe the fresh-faced quartet is something of another boy band-esque group that happens to play its own instruments. However, surprise will quickly set in upon pressing play on the polished Just My Luck, as the guys are actually closer in sound to pop-rockers the Monkees, the Beach Boys or even the one-hit fabrication that was the Wonders (yup, that band from Tom Hanks' flick, That Thing You Do!). Despite being ridiculously overproduced, the album does have its merits, and beams sunshine through its sparkling rhythms, shimmering vocal harmonies, and catchy, layered melodies. McFly are indeed competent musicians who already seem to understand how to make an appealing record. And well, the album should be chock-full of welcoming songs that are easy on the ears, as these Brits have just about taken cues for everything they do from the masters of pop who have come before them. Regardless of adolescent lyrics, every song sounds rather like a modern version of a pop/rock hit from somewhere in history that can't always be placed, and instead of actually listening to the songs at face value, initial spins are unconsciously spent going through a "where have I heard this song before?" list in one's head. McFly wear the influence of bands like the Beatles and the Beach Boys so blatantly on their collective sleeve it's oozing from practically every note played. Additionally, string arrangements are not used for mere dramatic effect in one single, requisite heartwarming/heart-tearing ballad as so many groups do, but appear over the entire record. And oftentimes, the strings are actually full-on orchestral arrangements that, when they're not turning innocent tracks into pure cheese, sound so disturbingly like a '40s musical backdrop, one can virtually see Judy Garland running around in the distance about to break out in song. Though an admittedly pleasurable and sunny listen overall, unless you're still distractedly doodling hearts and flowers on a social studies folder, there most likely won't be any need or desire to pick this album up.

McFLY the Best Band Ever!!!

Introducing... MCFLY!!! If you don't already know who McFLY are, you are missing out! They are four very talented lads from England whose infectious music has dominated the UK charts. They have experienced more success in the last two years than most bands experience in a lifetime! Already, they have been presented with a Guinness British Hit Singles and Albums award for becoming the youngest band to ever have a number-one album. This record was previously held by their idols, the Beatles. This is just one of their many awards. Now the boys are coming to America. They were on both the 1 April 2006 edition of CD:USA and the 6 May edition. They plan on doing more in the near future. A new Brit-Pop invasion is on the rise. So watch out, cos here they come! They also are starring in the new Lindsay Lohan flick Just My Luck. That hits America May 12. So go check it out!! You won't be disappointed!

McFly...not just pretty faces but guys who can actually SING!

I first saw this group on my tv when they were on some show called cdusa and immideatly noticed that one of their singers was incredibly hott (yah im shallow like that) : ) anyway i listened to their music and they are incredible! there aren't many bands out with such a pop rock sound like them...their kinda like our generation's version of the beatles in an odd way... these guys r HUGE over in britain and r trying to spread to america. they deserve it! GOOD LUCK MCFLY!!! : )

Welcome to the US

Mcfly reaches shelves across the US and we finally get to enjoy some of their greatest works from their previously released albums in the U.K. Fotunately, I became familiar with most of the tunes from an online streaming radio sation so I'm elated to hear the crisp, dynamic sounds on my ipod at last. The music: This isn't the typical hippidy hop that's been buzzin' about the US these last few years - it's more like rockidy rock originating from the land that birthed some rockidy greats such as the beatles, ...da Stones...Elton. :) Mcfly has had an amazing run in the UK since their first album was released allowing for #1 hits and record-breaking sales. Their sound is very youthfull and energetic laced with classic-style rock (in some cases ala Beach Boys) harmonies courtesy of the amazingly talented lead vocalists/guitarists Danny and Tom with the occassional harmonic tie-in provided by the band's bass player, Dougie. Keeping the group on beat, of course, is a drumstick-twirling Harry. Although the majority of their fanbase is comprised of adolecent high-pitched ladies, Mcfly's apparent love of classic rock is enough to keep this listener satisfied with their first US release and anxious to follow their musical careers as they evolve. nutshell: solid US release :)

Formed: London, England

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Similar to fellow British pop act Busted, London-based McFly came together and quickly won over the youth masses with their boyish charm and lively tales of adolescence. However, while Busted shared commonalities with the punk-edged accessibility of acts like blink-182 and Simple Plan, McFly owed a bit more musically to bands like the Beach Boys. Naming themselves after Michael J. Fox's character from the Back to the Future series, the guys — Danny Jones (guitar/vocals), Tom Fletcher (guitar/vocals),...
