EDITORS’ NOTES

The irresistible hooks and haunting vocals of bedroom production “Ocean Eyes” made Los Angeles teen Billie Eilish an internet sensation. This debut EP nudges things along nicely with its minimalist beats and lifting-yet-sinister lyricism. A rerecorded “Ocean Eyes” remains unnervingly assured, while the infectious pop of “Bellyache” holds a surrealist, macabre edge. Her voice—melancholy, theatrical, and soaring—impresses throughout and bears comparison to Lorde and Lana Del Rey. It’s hard to believe this all comes from a 15-year-old.

I don’t have this album yet(because I’m broke), but I do have the ep and have heard &burn 1000 times, and I can say it’s a great album for anyone who likes a lovely blend of alternative and pop.

About Billie Eilish

California singer and dancer Billie Eilish debuted her ethereal indie electro-pop sound when she was barely a teenager. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Eilish grew up in a household of actors and musicians, and was homeschooled along with her brother Finneas O'Connell (the Slightlys). At the age of eight, she joined the Los Angeles Children's Choir, developing the soulful vocals that would later appear on her early singles. After the release of "Six Feet Under" and "Fingers Crossed," Eilish made her breakthrough with "Ocean Eyes," produced and co-written with her brother Finneas and released by Interscope. It surpassed 14 million online streams and spawned a number of remixes with Astronomyy, Blackbear, and Goldhouse. Eilish followed up in February 2017 with "Bellyache," then landed another track, "Bored," on the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. An EP, dont smile at me, featuring the singles "COPYCAT" and "watch," followed later that summer. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
