Editors’ Notes

Amy LaVere doesn’t much care for niceties. She’ll kill her lover, if need be. Not surprisingly then, she opens Stranger Me, her first album in four years, with the impatient “Damn Love Song” where she appeases a guy by finally writing a song about him as she walks out the door. “Red Banks” is another dark, twisted love song where a body is taken away by the river. “You Can’t Keep Me” again poises this Southern singer-songwriter as a defiant one-woman show. She doesn’t seem to have relationships so much as episodes with her various lovers. This mental toughness is matched by a backing band that plays as loud, angry and dirty as the songs demand. It’s with a touch of shock that LaVere remolds avant-rocker’s Captain Beefheart’s “Candle Mambo” into her own piece and then turns around and tears up with the airy ballad “Cry My Eyes Out.” Stranger Me is an emotionally intense collection that never betrays her unflinching honesty.

RELIEF!

In a world where my favorite female songwriters aren't making songs anymore...Thank god I just found Amy LaVere.
I feel like I just refound a lost treasure of Hersch, Germano, and Sandoval rolled into one!

98% of the songs are great. Not an "overproduced" album---just raw songwriting and great music.

Love it!

I love her voice and the unique sound of the album!!

Calming

What first attracted me to her is that she sounds like Lykke Li a bit. But this chick sounds chiller.

While Amy LaVere's voice may have the high, breathy tone of a young girl, she brings to her music the emotional peaks and valleys of a grown woman who has certainly seen her share of the world, and it's hard not to believe that her adventurous life has informed her work. LaVere was born Amy Fant, in a small town near the border of Texas and Louisiana to parents who were part-time musicians. Her family's nomadic life led LaVere to live in 13 different places before she finished high school, and when...
