Joe's Cool rockin' persona!

Joe Ely live is one of those reasons you should always support live music. Joe is always a treat wheter he is playing solo acoustic, with the Flatlanders, performing with Guy Clark, John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett or with his own band. On this disc he has one of the hottest bands you will ever hear. Add this to his earlier Live Shots and you have the backdrop to a serious Texas Dance party. The show was an oft traded bootleg that has finally seen the official light of day. The band is Hot as are the songs. It Features Dasvid Grissom on lead guitar and the great Bobby Keys on saxaphone. Check out Me and Billy the Kid, Cool Rockin Loretta, Fingernails and My Baby think's she's French!

A Rediscovered Gem

In the late 1980's, I was watching my favorite music program, Austin City Limits, when Joe Ely came on and just tore the place apart with his music and band. I videotaped it and put it on an old cassette that was soon lost in a move. I have been hoping that another similar live set by him would see the light of day.

When "Live Shots" came out, I quickly bought it and liked it, but it was not like the Austin City Limits set. When "Live at Liberty Lunch" arrived, I enjoyed it as well, but was still not quite satisfied. I encountered the same thing with Joe's "Live at Antone's". He is at his best live but it just was not like the other wild, no holds barred, West Texas throw down that I had seen and heard before.

Well, with "Live in Chicago 1987", I don't need to wish anymore. This a great live set from Joe Ely's band. It is wild, fun, country rock and roll. His band is hitting on all cylinders (David Grissom on guitar, Davis McLarty on drums, Jimmy Petit on bass) and there is the added treat of Bobby Keyes (from The Rolling Stones and others) providing some excellent sax fills throughout the set. This is a great live listening experience and definite 5 star concert. Buy it!
