iTunes Editors’ Notes

Original Riot Grrrl and Bikini Kill leader Kathleen Hanna initially considered The Julie Ruin a one-off project that served as her alter ego back in 1998. Then her band Le Tigre took up her time and energy for the ensuing decade. But in 2010, Hanna began working with an interesting mix of musicians like filmmaker/actor/drummer Carmine Covelli, newcomer guitarist Sara Landeau, former Bikini Kill bassist Kathi Wilcox, and keyboardist Kenny Melman—and The Julie Ruin was back in a new formation. The sound here flows between guitar-based punk aggression and spunky dance-floor synths; it sounds like the emphasis was on capturing energy rather than finesse. Hanna isn't a traditional singer and shouldn’t be if the band is to succeed. She screams, yelps, pokes, laughs, and sings with an attitude that puts the songs over the top. “Ha Ha Ha” feels like a taunt. “Oh Come On” drives with aggression. “Just My Kind” slows things for nearly a reflective moment. “Girls Like Us,” “Cookie Road," and “Kids in NY” take a variety of points of view regarding the world around them.

It's so great to see Kathleen Hanna back! I've been listening to the album stream at NPR and I must say my mind is blown! The album is fun fun fun! I'd say it's a mash-up of B-52's, Bis, and Sleater-Kinney with a dash of Bikini Kill in some songs (Or simply Bikini Tigre 2.0?). All the instruments blends quite nicely, even the synthesizer.

This album truly deserves recognition beyond Bikini Kill/Le Tigre/Kathleen Hanna fans so spread the word!

Yes! Yes! Yes!

I have been waiting for this album for years... and it did not disappoint to say the least. I think the time and thought the band put into making this album really paid off. The production on this is great. The guitars are crunchy in a rock n roll sorta way but not too overpowering. The Keyboards sound great - they kind of have a "Charlie Brown" feel on some songs. The bass fits in the mix well - low and groovy. The beats are right on as well... and then there’s Kathleen's voice! She's just as potent as ever, tapping into different personalities and expressing all kinds of emotions and ideas, things I never even thought of. My favorite tracks (at this point) are "Kids in NY" and "Cookie Road." I will be listening to this for a very long time! Yes!

Great punk band

Yes punk band you better believe it some nice alienating riffs and smooth beats this band is the definition of punk or at least what it meant at its inception. This band has music you can't get anywhere else. Oh yea and next time you see a pop punk band, ask them if they know the "duo suicide" is.
