Editors’ Notes

Should any of these songs sound immediately familiar, that could be because a couple of them surfaced on soundtracks for the televised biker drama Sons Of Anarchy and the 2009 mountain-biking documentary Race Across The Sky. The 2010 EP Prepare for Black & Blue opens with Jacob A. Smith (who incidentally is the White Buffalo) crooning in a Conor Oberst-like warble over tuneful acoustic guitar picking. “Love Song #2” is a sequel to “Love Song #1” from his self-titled EP released five years prior. Here, his lovelorn lament makes for a gripping Americana folk tune. “Oh Darlin’ What Have I Done” adds an electric guitar lead and eerie backing vocals that sound haunted by the ghosts of outlaw country’s past. A rustic old parlor piano gives the title-track a romantic feel as Smith picks delicate arpeggios while singing the darkest and prettiest tune here. “John Jameson” is a dipsomaniac lullaby where Smith sounds equal parts Oberst and Waylon Jennings.

Customer Reviews

Why isn't this guy at the top of the charts?

It's actually really great that this incredible talent has been kept out of the lime light as long as he has... he's been able to self promote and maintain genuine musical inspiration throughout all his albums without any pressure to commercialize his sound. Its so unique, I love it! There's no corruption of raw talent going on in any of The White Buffalo's works. TWB's incredible story telling with its dark, haunting lyrics delivered on a distinctly full bodied vibrato that easily rivals that of Eddie Vedder blows me away every time. Good stuff indeed!

Greatness revived & revealed

His voice is an instrument all it's own, then you hear his lyrics and the result is overwhelmingly moving. Great band, great album, Greatness!

A Real Music Artist

I remember seeing him for the first time a few years back. It was during the Sundance Music Festival here in Park City, UT and he opened up for _______ (for the life of me, I can't remember who. Which, shows how much I was impacted by TWB's performance). Anyways, much like most concerts, people don't really care about the opening acts, and this time it was no different, as he began to play no one even thought twice about who was on stage. However, by the time he finished his set, he had every person completely enthralled and clinging to every note and lyric. When I am explaining the genuineness of his artistry and sound, I tell people that it's like he has kicked down the door and speaks directly to your soul. Obviously, when I tell them this, they naturally laugh and play it off, but as soon as they have seen him live. They know I wasn't bull------- them. This guy is the real deal, I am a huge fan! I have even driven 1800 miles round trip, just to see one of his live shows that he plays in little coffee shops and bars.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The White Buffalo is the project of earthy, Oregon-born and Southern California-raised singer/songwriter Jake Smith, who grew up listening to punk bands like the Descendents and the Circle Jerks and didn't pick up a guitar until age 19. During his college years in the Bay Area, he began writing and performing his own songs, hitting upon the White Buffalo name as one of several suggestions from his friends that he drew out of a hat. Smith's debut album, Hogtied Like a Rodeo, arrived in 2002, and he...
