The West Palm Beach, Fla.–based quintet Hey Monday has recorded three original yuletide carols (and a traditional one) overflowing with urgent adolescent emotions, tastefully executed by Cassadee Pope’s flawless singing. “Without You” sets the tone with a wintry cool as she pines for an absent boyfriend, using her soaring inflections and barbed melodies. The slower-moving “Shafted” waltzes like a prom-night anthem, but the lyrics here aren’t quite so romantic; she sings lovelorn laments about a guy with a lump of coal for a heart who had the nerve to leave her during Christmastime. But she turns up the holiday cheer on “Mixtape for Christmas,” a swooning piece of triumphant Christmas pop wherein she sings about receiving a curious 20th century artifact that contains a thoughtful mix of her favorite songs. Pope and company close with a gorgeous rendition of “Oh, Holy Night,” the EP’s only cover.
