Album Review

During the late '50s, Ella Fitzgerald continued her Song Book records with Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book, releasing a series of albums featuring 59 songs written by George and Ira Gershwin. Those songs, plus alternate takes, were combined on a four-disc box set, Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book, in 1998. These performances are easily among Fitzgerald's very best, and for any serious fan, this is the ideal place to acquire the recordings, since the sound and presentation are equally classy and impressive.

Customer Reviews

Essential Classic. Amazing music, phenomenal orchestrations. Unparralleled singing.

I'd been wondering whether iTunes had this entire collection for sale and I'm so glad they do. This entire collection is phenomenal and a steal for the price they have listed here. There's a reason that so many professional musicians across genres list Ella Fitzgerald as their favorite singer. When you hear another singer perform the same material, you wonder where all the rhythmic "fun" went. Nowhere is that "fun" more gleefully poured out than in the Gershwin Songbook. She really shines here and takes the already incredible material to another level. You will never hear Ira Gershwin's lyrics put across better. Nelson Riddle, who also orchestrated for Sinatra's projects outdoes himself here. Listen to the band turn the sunny corner into the chorus on the sample of S'Wonderful.

Worth every dollar

My father bought me this compelation back when i was eight..needless to say i was the only eight year old on the playground singing Sam and Delilah haha. But anyway.. i would recommend buying this ENTIRE set. Years later i still listen to it often. Ella's voice has a purity and depth of tone and range that will never be matched. This is a music investment you'll have for years to come that is worth every penny. Just buy it!!!

Clap Yo' Hands for Ella!

Awesome song. A Nice jazz song for all people. Write more reviews PLEASE! Ella deserves more acclaim.

"The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was arguably the finest female jazz singer of all time (although some may vote for Sarah Vaughan or Billie Holiday). Blessed with a beautiful voice and a wide range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a brilliant scat singer, and had near-perfect elocution; one could always understand the words she sang. The one fault was that, since she always sounded so happy to be singing, Fitzgerald did not always dig below the surface of the lyrics she interpreted...
