Album Review

This may not be as comprehensive a compilation as Bear Family's terrific A Legend in My Time, but in its own way, it's just as definitive. First of all, it's available domestically, which means far more listeners will be willing to give a listen to the genius of Gibson, but more importantly, it really does offer a concise, exceptional overview of his career. All of his hits are here, and it's possible to hear his pure, unadulterated brilliance here — how he was as melodic as the best pop, yet was unassailably country at the same time. Several of these songs are indisputable classics — "Oh Lonesome Me," "Blue Blue Day," "I Can't Stop Lovin' You," "Sweet Dreams," and "(I'd Be) A Legend in My Time" are all timeless, and while others may have defined these songs, these are all classics in their own right, and they define what is so wonderful about Gibson. He was a classic songwriter — these are timeless, wonderful songs, and it's hard not to hear them and fall in love with his talents, how he was melodic as a Tin Pan Alley songwriter but was completely country. This is where to hear his greatness, and even if it may not be as sublime as A Legend in My Time, it's wonderful — nay, essential — all the same.

One of the greatest songwriter/performers of the 20th century

Don Gibson was such a prolific artist that it is very hard to judge him by a "greatest hits" compilation. His work evolved from '49 through the 80s. In my opinion his peak was from 57 - 66. During his first 3 one day sessions with producer Chet Atkins in 1957 he recorded his compositions "Oh Lonesome Me", "I Can't Stop Loving You", and "Blue Blue Day". Those three songs alone were huge hits for himself, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Ray Charles, Kitty Wells and Neil Young. His '55 composition "Sweet Dreams" was recorded during Patsy Cline's final session and has become an enduring classic.

Gibson's work is also notable for his contributions to the "Nashville Sound" along with producer/guitarist Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, and the Jordanaires. Not to mention the astonishing guitar ensemble of Gibson, Atkins, Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland, Velma E. Williams Smith, Johnny Smith and later Jerry Reed. Don Gibson's music is worthy of serious study/enjoyment by any listener, casual or professional, for his gifted songwriting and the spectacular musicianship of Don and his regular studio pros. The production work of Chet Atkins is also worthy of close study. His work with Don had a lasting impact on the music business. Don's life's work deserves careful, repeat listening by fans of country, rock/pop and by any student of songwriting. These records just get better and better with repeat listens.

Singer/songwriter Don Gibson was one of the most popular and influential forces in '50s and '60s country, scoring numerous hit singles as a performer and a songwriter. Gibson's music touched on both traditional country and highly produced country-pop, which is part of the reason he had such a broad audience. For nearly a decade after his first hit single, "Sweet Dreams," in 1956, he was a reliable hitmaker, and many of his songs have become country classics -- they have been covered by a wide range...
