Album Review

Tom Freund is indeed one of the great singer-songwriters of the 1990's. He emerged in 1998 with an excellent debut album on Red Ant Records, North American Lost Weekend. That album presented his awesome talent to the world with clarity and a subtle vision. Freund's songs are loaded with a pragmatic vision and are sung in a distinct Tom Waits-influenced growl. Imitation, however, is not what Freund is about. This, his follow-up E.P. on his own label gives us a further and even more mature example of his vision. "Seat On A Train" and "Bombshell" are fantastic tracks, but Freund saves the best for last with "Simpatico," where he constructs a unique world, defines it, and then burns it to the ground. Truly unique and absolutely brilliant.

love it!

This is a geat album. Every song comes across as a labor of love. I would add this one to your collection of favorites.

Old and in the Way

If for no other reason, give this album a listen for "Old and in the Way". Perfect song for a long road trip. I've introduced many friends to Tom Freund with this song, as they are all hooked. While the rest of the album is good, nothing compares to "OaitW" - by far his best song on any album.

Freund, originally from New York, attended Claremont College in California in the early '90s and performed as a duo with future star Ben Harper. The two recorded a hard-to-find vinyl-only album in 1992 called Pleasure and Pain....
