Wonderful re-imagining of Simon & Garfunkel hits
I can't say enough good things about this wonderful album. Canadian violinist/arranger Antoine Bareil has taken 11 Paul Simon tunes (many of them fairly early ones) and crafted creative, captivating chamber arrangements of them for five "classical" instruments. This album is NOT a cheesy, Muzak-style affair. It is intricate, lovely, sometimes surprising, and always enthralling to the ear. Valerie Milot's harp sometimes takes the place of an acoustic guitar (including some nice pitch bending on "Bridge over Troubled Water") and sometimes floats above the texture in celestial cascades. Bareil's technique, sometimes using double- and triple-stops, is amazing. I found it hard to believe that there weren't more players involved. The addition of double bass and horn on some tracks was an inspired choice. Any fan of S&G will be delighted with this hommage, and for those who don't know all their old LP's, this new treatment will make a good introduction.
