New Secrets

New Secrets

Two noted indie singer/songwriters who make literary music that gets to the heart of things, Dennis Callaci (of Refrigerator) and solo artist Simon Joyner first united a decade ago with the one-mic/two-musicians set-up of the endearing Stranger Blues vinyl release. Recently they teamed up again in Callaci's living room for three days, backed by the band that supported Joyner on his 2012 Ghosts album. Guest appearances come from Nothing Painted Blue's Franklin Bruno and The Babies' Kevin Morby. The results are slightly more refined than usual, with the songwriters trading songs that balance each another. The simple, unencumbered midtempo rock of "Beat By Beat" nicely leads into the creaky and funereal "Tender Came By," where they capture a vibe as natural as untreated wood. There's no fancy musicianship, and each musician's part feels like a necessary part of the process.
