Album Review

Like the first track says, Delbert McClinton is like an old weakness, coming on strong. McClinton's music is a hybrid of rock, country, and blues, though that's much too analytical for this roadhouse. Sung and played throughout with sass and a knowing grin, this is music that speaks to everyone. And for once the guest artists add just the right amount, neither dominating nor lessening the proceedings.

Icon of the Blues

I don't know what it is about Lubbock, Texas -- maybe it's something in the water or blowin' on the never-ending wind -- but it consistently fathers some of the greatest musicians of the last half century. Delbert McClinton is one of the mainstays of the Lubbock music scene. It was great to see him finally come into his own and get some of the recognition he so richly deserves during the '80s and '90s, and he continues to define the Texas Blues sound into this new century. One of the Fortunate Few contains several of the standards that have made him an icon of the blues, including my personal favorite, Sending Me Angels. If there's somebody important in your life that you haven't contacted in a while, send them a copy of the video (http://youtube. com/watch?v=mj3I0YKplnI) -- guaranteed to result in smiles through tears. Better yet, send them the album. The world needs more Delbert McClinton fans!

Hard to beat

I was fortunate enough to see Delbert and Joe Ely share the stage together "on the Rox" in Lubbock in 78 or 79. Holmes is right, must be something in the water or maybe the constant wind that seems to produce consistently awesome music out here. If you never heard Delbert, buy this one. You won't be disappointed.

One Of The Fortunate Few

This is the album that made me love Delbert. A Great mix of Rock, Blues and a twist of Country. The guests seem to be perfectly matched with the songs without overdoing it. Old Weakness and Monkey Around should have been real hits!

The venerable Delbert McClinton is a legend among Texas roots music aficionados, not only for his amazing longevity, but for his ability to combine country, blues, soul, and rock & roll as if there were no distinctions between any of them in the best time-honored Texas tradition. A formidable harmonica player long before he recorded as a singer, McClinton's career began in the late '50s, yet it took him nearly two decades to evolve into a bona fide solo artist. A critics' darling and favorite of...
