I bought this cd on import 12 years ago and it still sounds great. One of the best effort by GM.

Navel Gazing at Its Worst

As a die-hard George Michael fan who has followed his career ever since the Wham! days, I have tried so hard to like this album, to no avail. It's a pretentiously somber affair and nothing more. George Michael has often claimed he was heavily stoned while making this album and it shows -- most of the songs are curiously slower than molasses in January and just plain boring. After more than 100 listens, I still can't warm up to it. OLDER was dedicated to his first love who had died of AIDS in the early 90s (and hence George Michael's absence from the studio in the first half of the decade). This would do much to explain the rather leaden atmosphere of this work, which is supposed to be about redemption and loss. What comes across more than anything, however, is that Michael is hell bent on being "deep" when that is clearly not his forte. He is at his best when he embraces his pop roots without apology as FAITH and LISTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE, two vastly superior albums, prove.
