Album Review

Although Trick Pony definitely fit into the pop-inflected contemporary country scheme, the trio always seemed to be an obvious extension of 1970s outlaw country, and thanks to the gritty singing and tough-as-nails stance of California-born singer, guitarist, and harmonica player Heidi Newfield, they managed to play it both ways. This short set picks the best tracks from Trick Pony's two Warner Bros. albums, 2001's self-titled Trick Pony and 2002's On a Mission (nothing from the band's third album, R.I.D.E., released by Curb Records in 2005, is included here), which means the hits "Pour Me," "On a Night Like This," "Just What I Do," and the infectious "A Boy Like You" are heavily featured. Newfield left the group for a solo career late in 2006, and while her replacement, Aubrey Collins, who came on board in 2007, is a more than capable singer, Newfield's sassy spirit was a big part of Trick Pony's appeal. What's here is fine, but it's only part of the story.

Not enought hits for a greatest hits / best of CD

I really like Trick Pony but how can you have a greatest hits best of CD when you haven't had enough hits. I like lots of the songs but they are almost all off one or two other CDs. This is just rereleasing old songs and trying to make more off them.

Great collection from Trick Pony

I'm late to the country music world, so I didn't hear of Trick Pony until after Heidi Newfield had already left. I heard the song "On A Night Like This" on the radio one day and it just hit me...BOOM! What a great catchy song!! Since then I've caught onto other songs like " Pour Me" and "Spent." Definitely worth buying!!!

Missing them

I'm surprised that they have a greatest hits. I wish they had made it a little bigger. They lose something on the CD they were better live. They used to be one of the house bands for the Wildhorse Saloons and they were awesome in concert. Best wishes for them.

Formed: 1996 in Nashville, TN

Genre: Country

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Contemporary country trio Trick Pony drew heavily from the sounds of the '70s, particularly outlaw country and country-rock. The group was formed by guitarist Keith Burns and bassist Ira Dean in 1996; the two had known each other for five years and were both working as sidemen for established artists -- Joe Diffie and Tanya Tucker, respectively. They decided on a two-man, one-woman format in which lead vocals would be shared, and Burns' wife at the time discovered a perfect fit in California-born...
