Editors’ Notes

In 2007, Bob Dylan's record company released three versions of the greatest-hits collection Dylan. The iTunes editions add bonus tracks to each. The basic version has 19 tracks, while this super-deluxe edition features 55 tracks, including all the bonus tracks from the other iTunes versions (a Mark Ronson remix of "Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine," plus live versions of "Blowin' in the Wind," "Tryin' to Get to Heaven," and "Can't Wait"). In the super-deluxe edition, this greatest-hits collection is up there with the very best. Dylan's career and catalog is a twisted affair, with some of his best material being released as part of The Bootleg Series many years after the fact. However, a casual Dylan fan who'd like to have a straightforward view of the man's work is well served here, with the inclusions of "Song to Woody," "Masters of War," "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," "I Shall Be Released," and "Blind Willie McTell," for starters. The album even features "When the Deal Goes Down" from 2006's Modern Times, the album closest to this collection's release date.

Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the vocalist's role in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock....
