Album Review

While not nearly as thorough as 1992's ridiculously complete Funkyworld: The Best of Lipps, Inc., Funkytown delivers all of the uptempo proto-new wave hits in one convenient package. Of course, the bad and good are present (why on earth anyone would unearth "Jazzy" and "I Need Some Cash" for a revival is beyond a guess), but the positive thing is that the good outweighs the bad with Lipps Inc., with some high-energy disco stompers and fun new wave numbers that will light up any party. Collectors of the group might want to stick with the aforementioned Funkyworld, but casual listeners will find this a more than sufficient survey of a brief yet largely unheralded career.

Tight Pair - 9/10 - I listened to this song at my 8th grade prom. I brought my Lipps Inc. CD. Good song. Let's Get Back to the Floor - 8/10 - I like this song, but it has too much bass and not enough vocals. Annoying if you have those small speakers that really pump the music. Obsessed - 9/10 - I like this. It sounds a lot like Let's Get Back to the Floor, but it doesn't have all the bass. The vocals aren't as quiet either. Designer Music - 10/10 - This song was 1 in Top 25 Most Played at 112 for a long time. This song is really good - a perfect combination of piano, bass, and vocals. A must-buy. On to You - 10/10 - I bought this song August 2002, when it was a Lipps Inc. single. I love it. It is currently by 1 song in Top 25 Most Played at 147. Designer Music is second. I Need Some Cash - 8/10 - This is really mediocre preformance. Not only in the bass, vocals, and piano--- but the words are so corny! Ha, it still gets an '8' for effort. Rock It - 10/10 - This song was an old single by Lipps Inc. in 1990. I really liked it, but never had it on CD. I was suprised to see it on this album, and I'm glad! I've listened to it 111 times. Jazzy - 10/10 - This is a followup to Lipp's 1990 song, that was a single with Rock It and a few other songs, Snazzit. I really liked Snazzit, and haven't been able to find that song for a while. But I'm glad to see its followup, Jazzy, on this album. Funkytown - 10/10 - This song is annoying because it is almost 8 minutes long. I've still listened to it 128 times. I would give the short version of Funkytown an 11/10. OVERALL: 100/5 STARS!!! Funkytown is a classic album. If you like pop, hip, or electronic, consider every song, from Obsessed to Jazzy.

I like this album. Funkytown is a hilarious song. Natalie isn't a hideous beast!

Formed: 1979 in Minneapolis, MN

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '70s, '80s

Before hard funksters like Prince and the Time hit the national stage, before groundbreaking alternative rockers Hüsker Dü and the Replacements, Minneapolis was barely a blip on America's musical radar -- that is, until Lipps, Inc. broke out with one of disco's most monumental singles, the number one smash "Funkytown." The brainchild of producer/songwriter Steven Greenberg, Lipps, Inc. (meant to be pronounced as a pun on "lip sync") wound up as one-hit wonders, but that one hit still stands as one...
