Solid

With Kevin Max, you either hold him to age-old standards, usually set by mainstream Christian music and/or his role in dc Talk, or you just go along for the ride. As a fan of his who simply goes along for the ride (no pun intended), I can honestly say that this is a good song. It's not great. It won't leave you flabbergasted like Your Beautiful Mind, Future Love Song, or I Need You, The End, and it doesn't quite have the pop appeal of Baby, I'm Your Man, or The Imposter.

Where On Yer Bike! succeeds is in its catchy, one-line chorus, its quirky lyrics, and a punchy guitar riff that fits the theme of the song. The biggest problem with the track is its lack of universality. For those who aren't into "bikes" in any way, it's difficult to really get into it. This song is fun to sing along to, play while driving (even in an SUV...), and it's an excellent album opener. I just hope the remainder of Cotes' new tracks pack a little more substance in.

Driven

Several reviewers of this song have mentioned the idea that this song may not quite measure up to the high bar standard set by other tracks by Max and - to an extent - I might agree. Part of the appeal of his music is the fact that to a significant degree, many of his lyrics probe the dank depths of larger questions relating to time, place, and the meaning of life in a manner that skips the sweet candy coating and, instead, forces the listener find their own answers.

"On Yer Bike!" offers a different direction and, I believe, a different intent altogether. While I'm sure that it wouldn't be too hard to scour the lyric sheet for the song and cook up a few meaty, although, hypothetical lyrical threads that could have larger implications, I think that this song is all about attitude worn on the sleeve. The track bleeds a mixture of arrogance and leather that, depending on mood and circumstances, one will either completely engage with or just hit 'skip' to get through. It is not a pop song and I don't think it was intended to be. It is a kicking rocker that succeeds.

(Get It) In Yer Library!

"On Yer Bike!" is an upbeat rocker, with a catchy-as-all-get-out guitar riff, Max's silk-smooth vocals, and keyboards that alternate between piano and church organ. Electronic effects play on and around the musical elements and give the song a unique feel. Oddly enough I feel that the song does have, in Max's words, a "bit" or a "smidgeon" of a Queen influence: Something about the guitar's sound and Max's vocals hint at that fun, almost-grandiose rock that Queen made.

The remix of "Your Beautiful Mind 2009" isn't quite as interesting, partly because this is the third time Max has released the song, but also because what's done with it doesn't quite change the nature of the song. Is this a problem? Not at all, but I wonder if the Vile Evils remix of "Out of the Wild" would've made for a better B-side.

Often perceived as the eccentric, attention-seeking member of the CCM trio DC Talk, Kevin Max grew up outside of Grand Rapids, MI. Formerly known as Kevin Smith, music played a vital part in his formative years. Max started singing at the age of four and remembers "being carted around to schools, churches, and radio programs." He attended college at Virginia's Liberty University, where he met fellow DC Talk members Toby McKeehan and Michael Tait. The three formed the band in 1987, merging the styles...
