Album Review

Nigel Clark's trio set in an intimate Scottish bar is a wide-ranging acoustic set that blurs boundaries, covering post-bop, Brazilian jazz and originals in an enticing performance. Clark's sound isn't overly derived from any of his predecessors on acoustic jazz guitar, while he also is a talented composer. Interspersed between the selections are brief interview excerpts, which are unfortunately embedded in the tracks, while it would have made more sense to have the interview feature as a separate program. The photography has an MTV flavor, as only two cameras were evidently used and one is given a grainy black & white texture for variety in the small venue. Highlights include the brisk samba treatment of "East of the Sun" and his soft ballad "In Another Moment."

Virtuosity with modesty, style and restraint

Nigel is a rare talent whose fluid, effortless technique allows his instrument to sing and carve intricate melodic lines as he improvises on his own and others compositions. He is a true virtuoso on the nylon string guitar and yet his performances are restrained and have an endearing modesty about them that avoids flamboyant excess or indulgent flashiness. The melodies are always clearly stated and the improvisations range from complex and exciting in the up-tempo pieces to extraordinarily beautiful, delicately phrased, almost mesmerising reflections in the ballads. He is obviously as talented a composer as an instrumentalist. His rhythm section is just as refined and together they have created an album of standards and originals that will be a welcome addition to any jazz enthusiast's library. I HIGHLY recommend this album - seeing Nigel play in person is an even better experience and I am lucky to be able to do so many times when he is performing on Sunday evenings in St. Andrews at The Old Course Hotel. He must be one of the top guitarists in the world today. Fabulous!

Years Active: '00s

Scottish acoustic guitarist Nigel Clark is a very flexible jazzman who can handle straight-ahead bop and post-bop as well as crossover/pop-jazz. Although instrumental jazz is Clark's primary focus, he is not a jazz snob or a jazz purist. Clark, whose influences range from Django Reinhardt, Jim Hall, and Joe Pass to Spanish flamenco great Paco de Lucia and Brazilian virtuoso Laurindo Almeida, has also played rock, pop, and modern Celtic sounds and is quite willing to incorporate elements of Brazilian,...
