iTunes Review

Already deservedly one of Britain's most acclaimed singer/songwriters, 23-year-old Laura Marling did her growing up in public, releasing her first EP at age 17 and steadily finding her voice with a series of albums that have led to this collaboration with producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Johns. The music's loose, flowing quality recalls albums such as Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, Tim Buckley's Blue Afternoon, Terry Reid's River, and Joni Mitchell's For the Roses, for starters. Rex Horan's bass, Ruth de Turberville's cello, and Johns' strategic percussive squalls combine with Marling's gently aging voice to work seamlessly through the first four tracks before taking so much as a breath. The raga-like open tuning of the early set revs up for "Master Hunter" before settling back into the gentle and reflective "Little Love Caster," where it's clear that Marling has more than enough musical ideas and personal thoughts to get through to the album's end. It's quite a feat.

Laura Continues to Evolve

Laura Marling is a musical genius. Her albums continue to evolve as she continues to embrace an honest, thoughtful, & sincere writing style.

Incredible singer, incredible musician...

I never write reviews. This may be my first on itunes. I felt compelled to write something because this album is transcendent. Listen to it. Listen to everything Laura does. She's a genius.

An epic of an album...

meant to be heard in full rather than in individual downloads. It is definitely worth the hour of sitting, and listening to the poetics of Laura's lyrics and the emotions that run through the "story" she tells. The song variety isn't as apparent as in her other albums, but the sense of continuity creates the thread that ties these songs together into a harmonious album -- a quality that is difficult to find nowadays.

By far my favorite of her albums thus far.

Singer/songwriter Laura Marling was only 16 years old when she emerged on the British indie scene in 2007 thanks to a handful of infectious singles made available on her MySpace profile. Endowed with a husky voice, an acoustic guitar, and a gift for building quirky, hooky folk songs (characteristics that find her compared favorably to artists like Lily Allen, Regina Spektor, and Martha Wainwright), Marling quickly made a name for herself throughout England thanks to a heavy touring schedule and a...
