Album Review

Charley Pride is one of the great singers in the history of country music. He doesn't always get his due, and most folks think he disappeared long ago. This set, Pride and Joy: A Gospel Music Collection a solid, top-to-bottom country gospel album, is evidence that Pride hasn't gone anywhere. And while it's true his voice has undergone some changes due to age, it's become more emotive and powerful. It's a bit rawer around the edges, but that serves the material here just fine. Pride's reading of Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey's "Take My Hand Precious Lord," is simply stunning, as are his takes on the rollicking "Jesus Take My Hand" by Albert Brumley, Bill Monroe's "Mansions for Me," and Bill & Gloria Gaither's "I'm Gonna Sing."

Charley's Gospel

This is a very good album. Mr Pride is at his best when singing the Gospel. He had a earlier album come out with such songs as The church in the wildwood, Did you think to pray, Take time out for Jesus, Jesus don't give up on me, Let me live and a few more. But it is impossible to find it anywhere on the web for some reason. I liked it a little better. But this is still a great Gospel album and Charley really can sing these songs excellent. You will enjoy it very much.

Good to hear Pride do Gospel again

I agree that Pride does gospel well, and this album is no exception. I remember a particular song from an old lp that I would be SO happy to hear again . . . haven't been able to find it anywhere online, not even the lyrics ("Jesus is your savior, child, don't ever let Him go. Place your life in His direction/ you'll reap just what you sow . . . .") who knows, maybe if this album sells well, Pride will remake some of those old ones?

Sunday Morning with Charlie Pride

Sunday Morning with Charlie Pride was his first and best. I have an 8 track of it but have not found it anywhere else. "Jesus is Your Savior Child" is the title of the song the other review referred to.

With 36 number one hits under his belt, Charley Pride, who is black, has helped prove how little race matters to the majority of country music fans. It's taken a long time to understand that, though. His first single, "Snakes Crawl at Night," was released without publicity photos, as some in the industry feared listeners would automatically reject a black country singer. Since then, Pride's 12 gold albums in the United States, combined with 30 gold and four platinum internationally, place him in...
