Reseña de álbum

Better known as the guitarist for Tristeza, Jimmy LaValle records on his own under the name the Album Leaf; this is his second album. Like the first, it's a primarily downtempo, guitar-centered record, made up of moody and attractive compositions that feature long lines and slow developmental processes. The more contemplative numbers ("Wet the Day," "Gust of...") bring to mind early-'70s Brian Eno; in fact, "Wet the Day" evokes "Discreet Music" specifically in several places. On other tracks, such as the somewhat more energetic "The MP" and a very nice acoustic guitar showpiece called "Story Board," LaValle brings to mind a more low-tech Durutti Column. On the few occasions that bass and drums enter the mix, the effect is refreshing. This stuff occasionally gets tedious (and on "Hang Over" LaValle is annoyingly out of tune), but if you relax and go with it you'll probably find it very enjoyable.

Music You Can Relax To

I first of The Album Leaf from the song "Eastern Glow" which was featured on the soundtrack, "Music from The O.C. Mix 2." Upon listening to Leaf's music, I quickly grew to love it. This is the type of music where after a long day of work and studying for class, I can put on this music and relax. This album is a must have for those who seek some relaxing music.

Top Notch!

This is a really solid album. Reading the other reviews, most will give you the impression that this music is good for about one thing: going to sleep to. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's almost an insult. I don't think The Album Leaf was in the studio and was like, "Yeah, we are trying to produce something that will put our listeners to sleep. Yeah that's what we are going for." Granted, to listen appropriately you have to give it some time, and if you are waiting for the song to swing around into a hook and chorus, you might be disappointed. But if you have some time on your hands (ie. at work, driving really far, etc.), just let it play through the whole album and go with it, like classical music or Sigur Rós. You'll enjoy it.

Stop fighting. Start listening to The Album Leaf.

The Album Leaf began as the solo project of Jimmy LaValle, a San Diego-based songwriter who started recording solo material one year after forming the post-rock band Tristeza. Inspired by a number of genres — classical, jazz, and post-rock among them — LaValle constructed his own songs in a similarly eclectic manner, utilizing everything from ambient noise to field recordings to radio transmissions. An Orchestrated Rise to Fall introduced the resulting sound in 1999. An EP (In an Off...
