Album Review

Nearly identical to 1990's Greatest Hits and 1995's The Jive Collection, Funky Beat: The Best of Whodini contains all but one of Whodini's charting singles (including "One Love," "Friends," "Funky Beat," "Freaks Come Out at Night," "Five Minutes of Funk," and "Magic's Wand") and a couple better-known — and radio-unfriendly, lyrically — album cuts ("I'm a Ho," "Judy"). Any hip-hop fan who came of age after the '80s is likely to think of all this as very primitive and inextricably linked to its era, but he or she will certainly find out that Whodini were one of the primary groups to set the precedent for the fusion of hip-hop and R&B that would begin to dominate radio during the early '90s.

They are one of the most underated rap groups of all time!!!! these guys fused r&b with hip hop the Best, didn't cuss weren't gangsta, just plain fun dancing hip hop helped change the whole genre of rap.Should be in rock-nroll hall of fame!!! Get the rest of thier albums on itunes please, people will buy them.

Whodini deserves to have all the albums listed, there are more tracks that the new skool needs to hear. I would like to see them get back together for another album with that old skool style. Thank you for "Friends" fellas, my all time favorite!

Great, but add the older CD's! My tapes are worn out!

"Whodini" ('83), "Escape" ('84) and "Back in Black" ('86) are the roots of hip hop. Please add them! You're missing out on classics like "Echo Sratch" "Nasty Lady" "Underground" "How Dare You" and "Rap Machine." These three albums are gold.

Coming out of the fertile early-'80s New York rap scene, Whodini were one of the first rap groups to add a straight R&B twist to their music, thus laying the groundwork for the new jack swing movement. The group consisted of rappers Jalil Hutchins and John "Ecstasy" Fletcher, adding legendary DJ Drew "Grandmaster Dee" Carter, known for being able to scratch records with nearly every part of his body, in 1986. Whodini made its name with good-humored songs like "Magic's Wand" (the first rap song to...
