Album Review

Cheers 2 U is a promising debut from the Southern hip-hop trio Playa. The trio has been part of Da Bassment, a loose collective of producers and musicians headed by Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot and Timbaland & Magoo. All of the members of Da Bassment are intent on retaining the grit and soul of classic R&B, but never lose sight of moving contemporary hip-hop into the future through unexpected samples and unpredictable songwriting. Playa don't always carry through on their ambitions on Cheers 2 U, but the failures hardly detract from the blazing success of the moments that work, and in the end, the album is a debut of enormous potential.

Static Major, of this R&B trio, died late February shortly after completing a music video shoot for Lil Wayne's single, "Lollipop." He died on February 25, 2008 due to complications from surgery. He was known for writing many hit songs for artists like Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Destiny's Child, Brandy, and JoJo. Static Major was also featured in songs by David Banner, Lil Flip, Jay-Z, Pretty Ricky and T-Hud (on a song with UGK shortly before Pimp C's death). I don't know too much about the others, but Static Major was a great artist even though I had never heard of him before "Lollipop," and he will surely be missed. All in all, this is a pretty good R and B album. I don't usually listen to R&B because I generally prefer hardcore rap, but this is a must if you love this genre. Also, Rest in Peace to Aaliyah, another associate of Timbaland.

8 years old and I still love to listen to it!

Great songwriting and producing(some tracks by Timbaland and others by Playa). They are great singing together or individually. Great album but horrible marketing by Def Jam. I don't know how else to explain why this album didn't blow up. It's a shame they haven't gotten around to doing another album together.

Hey, check this out. Playa is one of the best R&B groups I have ever heard. They sing, produce, and write. They're genius. This is one of those albums where you can listen to the entire thing...IF you're married and gettin' your thang on. Lol. Every song on here is quality in terms of musicality, I just have beef with some of the subject matter. Most of the people I talk to never had or heard this album, and that's a shame. For R&B music from like the '80s on, this album is the best that I've heard. It's really a shame that Playa didn't do another album, and make more love songs.
