Evocative, sublime, wonderful...

Ivy is one of those bands that, once you've heard their music, you find yourself scratching your head in wonder as to why they're not HUGE superstars and everyone knows their complete repertoire. The best way I can describe what their music is capable of is its capacity to precisely capture a sense of longing - but a very specific longing - where places like the seaside, the ocean, pastoral nature, act as metaphorical stand-ins for meaningful human connection. An artist friend of mine once said that poetry knows only two subjects: love and loss. The same can be said for many of Ivy's best, most hypnotic and transcendental tracks. "Undertow" and "Edge of the Ocean" are nearly as perfect as you can get to a definition (or explanation) of why music at its best uniquely captures human longing, whatever the object sought may turn out to be. Ivy is one if those bands you both want to keep as a secret out of sheer selfishness, but also tell ALL your friends (or, hell, strangers alike as well) about because you just know they'll love it as much as you do. And if they don't, they're clearing suffering from some deep character flaws of some sort where longing, desire, and the very human desire to desire at all just to feel alive, is lacking in their psyche for whatever reason and are therefore objects to be pitied. But for the rest of us who love this music, we can very gratefully count ourselves among the lucky few who've managed to re-discover this gem of a band and their rare and clearly hard-wired connection to what great lyrical music is all about.

懐かしい!

I loved Ivy when I was in high school and remembered her music again when I was watching Roswell recently. I have since lost her CD over the years but thankfully iTunes has her music so I can buy it again which is awesome.

She's great and I totally recommend her!

Easy Going…with a Kick

I admit I got the album because I loved "At the Edge of the Ocean" on Roswell. But I really love how the moody music (and the sweetly breathy singing Dominique Durand) comes with super acid lyrics like "I'm just gonna leave you disappointed." and "While we're in love we'll bleed each other dry." Some songs are less cynical, but you do feel the weight of life in context best enjoyed with a smooth cocktail at the end of the day.

Biography

Formed: 1994 in New York City, NY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The New York-based pop group Ivy came together in 1994 when multi-instrumentalist Andy Chase placed an ad in the Village Voice in an attempt to start a band. Musician/songwriter Adam Schlesinger answered Chase, for the two had mutual musical tastes — both liked Prefab Sprout and the Go-Betweens. Within months, the two met Parisian-born Dominique Durand. Durand had come to New York in 1989 to learn English, not join a band. Ironically enough, Durand was a massive music fan and adored the sounds...
