iTunes Review

Few bands come near the screaming intensity and mathematical complexity of The Dillinger Escape Plan. For this quintet, time signature changes are as natural as breathing and less a point of showing off than a tool to better express a variety of emotions. The band's fifth studio album, One of Us Is the Killer, refines its sound without sacrificing the naked aggression. The title track in particular captures a myriad of moods in its three and a half minutes. The band uses quieter moments to set up grander payoffs for when it hits the pedal to the metal. There's still an end-of-the-world tumble in the post-hardcore speed race of "When I Lost My Bet" and a dark mysticism to the post-grunge harmonies circulating through "Nothing's Funny." It's most interesting to hear familiar setups lead to unexpected results. In the hands of a lesser group, "Paranoid Shields" would be a standard-issue metal riff, but the Plan throws the basic idea several steps beyond to achieve a rewarding stereo-wide axe-battle.

The sampler sounds amazing, I'm in

They know the secret to keeping it fresh & that is ya gotta, ya gotta...ya gotta...I'm dead.

After listening to the sampler..

My body is definitely not ready for this.

Worth Every Penny

Bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan earn every penny that they get from me. The sampler, singles, and live performances of new songs alone are enough to secure a purchase from me. However, it should be noted that they pour every bit of care imaginable into creating their soundscapes. The infusion of jazzy time signatures with face-melting metal brutality and introspective lyricism that TDEP always come through with isn't loved by all, and it probably shouldn't be; but I, for one, must have every drop of this nectar injected directly into my ears. It's music and bands like this that make me feel like there is still art and not all industry.

The Dillinger Escape Plan create maniacally intense, crushingly metallic, and decidedly hardcore punk-infused jazz-time-signature-invoking compositions displaying an unparalleled musical bravery, precision musicianship, meticulously thought-out, and complex structuring, and rigorous physical endurance. The band's guitarists and drummer are regular features in publications geared toward the guitar- and drum-playing set. The depth of extremity and mental challenge presented by their music virtually...
