Album Review

The sound was not all that new but the label was as Maynard Ferguson and his orchestra, which had just concluded a long association with Roulette, switched briefly to Cameo. The big band was still in prime form, playing both swing standards and originals with power, swing and spirit. In addition to Ferguson's screaming trumpet, altoist Lanny Morgan, Willie Maiden and Frank Vicari on tenors, baritonist Ronnie Cuber and pianist Mike Abene are heard from prominently while Abene, Maiden and Don Sebesky contribute most of the arrangements. This rare LP (which has not yet been reissued on CD) is worth the search.

A Fitting Title and Epitaph

Truly, Maynard Ferguson is the "The One and Only". This final recording of Maynard and his Big Bop Nouveau Band is an emphatic exclamation point on a legendary career. For this final CD - finished just weeks before his death, the "Boss" gathered together some of his stellar alumnus from earlier bands to fill out his already tight BBN ensemble. These additions combined with great musical compositions, makes this a CD for the ages. If you are a trumpet fan - heck, if you are a fan of good, straight forward Jazz, you will love this album. It has it all - from up tempo, sizzling and wide pieces like "Besame Mucho" to tender and beautiful ballads such as "Darn that Dream" where Maynard issues his final recorded notes. The One And Only Maynard Ferguson

This is a wonderful album. It's too bad the tracks that are available for download from iTunes have all sorts of digital distortion and skipping. You can even hear it at the very end of the demo track they've posted for "Darn That Dream". It's been that way since the first day this album appeared on iTunes. Hopefully, iTunes will now make an effort to fix this quickly.

great album

Once again a great album from Maynard! Only problem is, the last song skips and I have heard this also from a friend who downloaded it. Hopefully itunes can address the problem. Don't download the last song until it's fixed.

When he debuted with Stan Kenton's Orchestra in 1950, Maynard Ferguson could play higher than any other trumpeter up to that point in jazz history, and he was accurate. Somehow he kept most of that range through his career and since the 1970s has been one of the most famous musicians in jazz. Never known for his exquisite taste (some of his more commercial efforts...
