iTunes Editors’ Notes

While the greatest-hits compilation Skeletons in the Closet covered the first half of Oingo Boingo’s career—when it was signed to A&M—Best O’ Boingo takes on the second part, from 1984 to 1990, when the band switched to MCA. Though Oingo Boingo stayed remarkably consistent throughout the decade, these later works are notable for their undertones of darkness and the density of the arrangements. While the early tunes were based on skittering ska-inflected rhythms, songs like “When the Lights Go Out,” “Gratitude,” and “No Spill Blood” show the band transforming into a robust engine for modernized funk. While “Not My Slave” and “Stay” mark Oingo Boingo's first moments of outright tenderness, the period is still best defined by its biggest hits. While the slick, stomping “Weird Science” became an anthem for nerds across the globe, “Dead Man’s Party” is a cinch for the group’s all-time best song. With its insidiously catchy surf guitar motif, it packs a boxer’s power into a tune as seductive as a snake charmer’s melody.

LA's Best Kept Secret of the 80's

Few outside LA has ever heard of the group Oingo Boingo. KROQ listeners were about the only ones. Thanks to the TV genre, many have heard the name Danny Elfman but did not have the opportunity to appreciate his music prose in the band. This very quirky and highly entertaining band is easily summed up in this great collection of fine work. Best O’ Boingo displays the musical mastery of the band and Elfman lyrically displays the angst many teenagers are feeling. That, in itself, is difficult to translate. Many of us will remember the live shows, especially the Halloween party. These are very talented and well trained musicians who put on a fantastic live performance and wrote timely, intricate music and lyrics. You would be hard pressed to find a band that can emulate all of their sounds. Purchase of this collection is a true no-brainer and a must for any Boingo fan. This is great on an iPod while exercising. There you can listen to the many nuances of Oingo Boingo. Miss you people. Curtis Chow, Cottonwood, CA

Absolutely amazing!

If you are new to Oingo Boingo, this album is an excellent place to start. It has a wide variety of music, from the satirical humor of 'Only a Lad' to the soft beauty of 'Stay' and 'Out of Control'. Oingo Boingo's diverse talent and Danny Elfman's fearless vocals are a simply stunning combination. Best O' Boingo is brimming with musical genius, and is completely enthralling from start to finish.

This is one of those albums that makes you feel.. WOW! Elfman reaches his highest potential in this astounding compilation which truly is the BEST of boingo. This album is definately not backround music. None of Oingo Boingo's albums are. You've gotta be in the mood for a rush of an intense crazy feeling. This is definately good stuff! For any boingo fan. (Geddes, if you're out there, Listen to this!!!) Definately my favorite band! Make sure you listen to the songs before purchasing. It's an aquired taste that is worth aquiring!

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

Although Oingo Boingo was often compared to Devo throughout their career (due to both bands' affinity for quirky new wave, goofy stage acts, and most obviously, peculiar yet intriguing band names), Oingo Boingo never obtained the mainstream success that Devo did. But the band did manage to obtain a large and devoted fan base, especially in their hometown of Los Angeles, CA. Oingo Boingo started not as a traditional group per se, as they were originally put together in the '70s by movie director Richard...
