Editors’ Notes

The story goes that 20-year-old Jackson Scott moved from Pittsburgh to North Carolina to attend college but dropped out and spent the time putting his home recordings onto Soundcloud. That began attracting attention—including some folks at Fat Possum Records, which agreed to put out these delightfully weird songs as young Scott’s debut album. Anyone who grew up in the days when home four-track machines opened up primitive recording studios for every potential musician will surely nod their heads to the muddy but cheerful harmonies and the sudden electric guitar solo driving “That Awful Sound” or the hazy mystery that flows throughout “Evie.” For additional instrumental ambition, there’s the charming dissonance of “Tomorrow” and the space-age keyboards coalescing as “Wish Upon.” There’s a singularity of tone but not of approach that lends a pretty symmetry to Melbourne; it sounds like far more than just the random experiments of a solo musician. Quite endearing.

S'wonderful!

Really great debut album! I think this guy is a TRUE ARTIST!!! There is a sense of a profound mind behind the catchy tunes and layered atmospherics. I get the sense that music keeps this guy sane and he will create, not for money, not for fame, but because he has to. And that's where the real stuff comes from.

Rough, Raw, Psychedelic Punk Music

Jackson Scott's debut Melbourne is carnival of sounds, moods, and pitch-shifted voices all crafted on a 4 track tape. The album has its flaws, mainly when Scott gets a bit too experimental, but it is one of my favorites of 2013 so far and shows that Jackson Scott has bright future.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Pittsburgh native Jackson Scott moved to Asheville, North Carolina to go to college, then promptly dropped out and strung together a series of low-paying jobs, including one where he was fired for ditching work to see Ty Segall play. While all this was going on, Scott was also spending time in his bedroom recording odd psychedelic jams that sounded equally inspired by Syd Barrett and Weezer, and usually featured Scott's voice pitched up to just below Chipmunk level. He started putting them up on...
