Director Paul W.S Anderson (Resident Evil, Death Race) was wise to snag composer Paul Haslinger for his explosive, popcorn-hurling take on Alexandre Dumas' Three Musketeers, as the ex-Tangerine Dream member seems more than up to the task of keeping up with his partner in crime's kinetic pace. Similar in style to Hanz Zimmer's playful and boisterous work on Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes reboot, Haslinger trades the regality and pomp of the past, in this case, 17th century France, for the propulsive cacophony of a Michael Bay film, blending explosive, electro-percussion and classical action cues with comical harpsichord runs, resulting in a listening experience that works wonderfully when taken in short bursts, and with more than a few grains of salt.
When We Were Young
Love to see that Take That's song is actually available from this movie! Wasn't available with Stardust or X-Men. Of course, I already had it, because iTunes is late... still nice to see!
I was so happy that Take That's song "When We Were Young" was featured in this movie. They rarely get any American exposure, although they are still huge in the UK, so to have their song play during the roll of the credits was great. Some additional info you might not know: They watched an pre-screening of this movie and were inspired to write this song for it. That's how it was created.
Can anyone say...
...Pirates of the French Revolution. It's not terrible...we've just heard it all before - and likely in a better movie.
