iTunes Editors’ Notes

This is the 107-song collection that Roy Orbison clearly deserves. Bringing together songs from every era and record label in one place, The Soul of Rock and Roll allows the listener to hear Orbison's evolution from an early Sun Records rockabilly rocker to the Monument Records artist who recorded some of the most dramatic pop of the early ‘60s and eventually re-emerged in the ‘80s with an enviable set of allies in record producers Jeff Lynne, T-Bone Burnett, Brian Eno, and Rick Rubin, and movie directors David Lynch and Wim Wenders, who understood the overlooked majesty of the man's work and saw to it that he did not go on ignored. Whether it's the initial youthful flash of "Ooby Dooby," or the paranoiac orchestration driving "Running Scared," "Only the Lonely," "Dream Baby" or "In Dreams," Orbison was a singer of stunning virtuosity and emotional depth. Twelve unreleased tracks, demos and live recordings (including highlights from the "A Black and White Night" TV special with Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello joining on the Grammy-winning performance of "Oh, Pretty Woman") make this the definitive and comprehensive collection.

107 Tracks of Greatness

This new Orbison box set contains 4 cds of greatness. It is considered by many to be one of the greatest Roy Orbison products ever. Even Rolling Stone gave it a 5 star review. It pours greatness from the moment you begin to listen. Personally, I am very glad that some of those 1950s recordings were made available to the public. The previously unreleased material (mainly the first 32 tracks) is so great. The song "Tutti FruttI' has to be one of my new all-time favorite songs. Roy Orbison's voice sounds like gold. While he is accompanied by some of the world's greatest musicians and songwriters, Orbison's sound reaches a new level of greatness.

GENIUS

Simply stated: The GREATEST single talent in the history of Rock. Buy this. A must for all who love music. With the exception of Dylan, all must pay homage to the true King.

BFS Man

I don't know if I'd call Roy Orbison the greatest talent in the history of rock & roll, but nobody had a better voice. k.d. lang said that covering "Crying" would be the musical equivalent of painting a mustache on Mt. Rushmore. Well, her duet with Roy is here, and it's pure genius. If the collection had nothing else in it, it deserves five stars simply on the basis of Roy's cover of "Unchained Melody".

Biography

Born: April 23, 1936 in Vernon, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s

Although he shared the same rockabilly roots as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison went on to pioneer an entirely different brand of country/pop-based rock & roll in the early '60s. What he lacked in charisma and photogenic looks, Orbison made up for in spades with his quavering operatic voice and melodramatic narratives of unrequited love and yearning. In the process, he established rock & roll archetypes of the underdog and the hopelessly romantic loser. These were...
