iTunes Editors’ Notes

Melissa Etheridge has always believed that rock ‘n’ roll is best when delivered with the most amount of passion and drama possible. It’s made even her quietest moves sound like a rumble in the jungle. Her love for Bruce Springsteen’s most spine-chilling moments has led her to sing at the top of her powers and even when she settles down for “Indiana,” it’s with the belief that she’s bringing all the lost and forgotten souls along for the ride. Her liberal stance as an out-of-the- closet gay woman is aimed at Carrie Prejean on “Miss California” and her embracing of President Barack Obama is at the heart of “We Are the Ones.” Her critics say she is strident and bombastic, but that is exactly what her fans love about her. She stands up for what she believes in and talks tough no matter the pain behind the scenes. Her strength is how she turns up the volume for the shuffling “Nervous” and the atmospheric “Only Love.” The bonus cuts, the acoustic-based “The Heart of a Woman” and “Away” are actually softer turns at the mic than the official album.

Customer Reviews

Best album in years

Don't get me wrong, love all of Melissa's music and "Awakening" was a very thoughtful entry. This is the best, back to the rock-roots album she's made in years. Lyrics full of meaning and music with an edge to it. Reminds me of the early albums like "Brave and Crazy" or "Never Alone". Awesome job, Melissa!

Melissa is back!!!

Wow. This is one fantastic album!
Full of passion, and Melissa is finally back to rocking out. The songs are filled with everything: spirituality, motherhood, sexiness, anger, joy, confusion, understanding, and loss.
Here it is 2:30 in the morning and I'm all fired up and inspired with no place to go. Just fantastic!

Stunning

By far her best work ever. I’ve just finished listening all the way through, some songs actually brought tears to my eyes. It will touch you, rock you, and is quite simply stunning from beginning to end.

Melissa Etheridge became one of the most popular recording artists of the '90s due to her mixture of confessional lyrics, pop-based folk-rock, and raspy, Janis Joplin/Rod Stewart-esque vocals. But the road to stardom was not all smooth sailing for Etheridge as she debated behind the scenes whether or not to disclose to the public that she was gay early on in her career.
