14 Songs, 48 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

As a film director with a strong minimalist vision, Jim Jarmusch also values soundtrack music that’s in sync with his visual strengths. His 2014 film Only Lovers Left Alive observes the immortal lives of vampires in love and their fascination with loud, feedback-embalmed rock ’n’ roll. This score features Jarmusch’s glorious trio SQURL and Dutch composer-lutist Jozef Van Wissem riffing through dark ambient pieces that value sparse orchestral touches, unnerving, disembodied vocals, and guitar distortion alongside an occasional underground rocker (“Please Feel Free to P*ss in the Garden”). “Spooky Action at a Distance” lives up to its title. Yasmine Hamden’s “Hal” casts its own spell.

But what about the good songs?

The blues and soul Jarmusch curated, not the vampire rock and Tangiers atmospherics he commissioned--where are those?

Movie and music MIND BLOWN

This movie easily became my top five favs! but the soundtrack...I have never been in such a hypnotizing trance before while watching a movie and it was all due to the music!

Alice Black ,

Beautifully haunted.

This is probably the best soundtrack to any film, ever.
